After several days of waking up in the middle of the night, I think I've finally adjusted to a Malaysian schedule. We're having a brilliant time. Here's a quick summary of the first week:
Thursday:
Arrived at KL International at around 2PM. Met by Andrew Cheah, the pastor of SMACC, the church we're visiting here, and Chris and Mark, friends from Oxford who are working at SMACC this year. Drove to the OMF guest house to freshen up, then dinner with Andrew and his family.
Friday: Happy Birthday Sam!
Took taxis to Suria KLCC, a huge up-scale shopping mall at the base of the Petronas Towers. After lunch, Greg, Michael, Gordon, and I went up the KL Tower, the world's 4th tallest space needle. Left that evening to help on the Cathedral's youth camp for the weekend.
Saturday:
A good time of getting to know the kids, helping to lead small group discussions, and playing games. My roommate Bryony and I chatted into small the hours of the morning and paid for it the next day.
Sunday:
Returned from camp, relaxed at OMF, attended our first service at SMACC. The bus ride home was eventful, to say the least. Most of our drinking water was used as ammunition.
Monday:
Attended the apprentice training day, where we watched and discussed a John Chapman video on how to give a Bible talk.
Tuesday:
The team had the morning off and went our separate ways. I had lunch with Sam and Ben at Ampang Park and then walked around KLCC with Caroline.
Wednesday:
Greg, Gordon, and I spent most of the day cataloging and packing the archives of OMF Malaysia. Transferred loads of papers from ancient dirty boxes into fresh ones. The others were preparing for the Holiday Kids' Club at the end of the month.
Other highlights? The food here is amazing. So far we've tried Chinese, Indian, Malay, and Thai cuisine -- all brilliant, but Thai is still my favourite.
And team dynamics? Suffice it to say that the atmosphere of suspicion is so thick as to be almost tangible. The practical jokes are flowing thick and fast. Nobody repeats themselves without scanning the remark for a duff; nobody leaves the table without finding something missing upon their return; most of us have had cold water poured over our heads at least once; and Michael's hat keeps turning up in the strangest places...
