Today I learned the significance and beauty of the early church's tradition of applying ashes to the forehead in the shape of the cross to mark the beginning of Lent. Ashes remind us of our sin and mortality, and the cross reminds us that only through Christ can we have eternal life.
The benediction for this day is one of the finest I've ever heard:
Jesus Christ give you grace to grow in holiness -- to deny yourselves, take up your cross, and follow him; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen.
